What is Cloudberry and why does your skin need it?

A rare Nordic berry that makes your skin look radiant, healthy and even-toned may sound too good to be true, but this legend is very much real…and native to Scandinavia.

Cloudberry (scientifically known as Rubus chamaemorus) is a tiny golden fruit that is packed with Vitamin C – more than four times of an orange – that when applied to the skin is proven to brighten and energize dull complexions, as well as protect the skin and eye area from signs of aging.

Apart from Vitamin C, cloudberries are rich in Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that shields the skin from harmful free radicals that attack proteins like collagen. Essentially, helping you prevent wrinkles, dryness, and lackluster skin. Plus, cloudberry seed oil is replete with Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that not only bolster the skin’s protective capabilities, but also help it retain moisture and reduce fine lines.

Best of all, cloudberry extract is ideal for all skin types – most especially for those with sensitive, inflamed, dehydrated and irritated skin. It is effective at calming the redness and reactivity of rosacea and inflammatory acne.

The elusive cloudberry plant

Cloudberries are some of the scarcest berries in the world. They are found almost exclusively in the arctic between sprawling fjords and glacial mountains, allowing them to survive temperatures as cold as -40 degrees Fahrenheit. These resilient plants are not easy to find in the wild and picking locations are kept secret and maintained by families that have tended to these fields for generations. They can only be picked for a couple of weeks in July, and if you are caught illegally sneaking a few at any other time you can expect a hefty fine.

Aside from using their seed oil for skin care, these tart, raspberry-like berries can be turned into jam to preserve them. In Norway, they are traditionally mixed with whipped cream and sugar to make a dessert called multekrem. And across northern Scandinavia, cloudberries are sold for use in preserves, tarts, and liqueurs. Undoubtedly a culinary legacy left by the Vikings who also incorporated this delicacy in their food and drink, as well as used them for medicinal purposes.
